BEECH IN EASTERN ALPS

I am glad to announce that a new article has been published

DI FILIPPO, Alfredo, BIONDI, Franco, CUFAR, Katarina, DE LUIS, Martin, GRABNER, Michael, MAUGERIO, Maurizio, PRESUTTI SABA, Emanuele, SCHIRONE, Bartolomeo, PIOVESAN, Gianluca. 2007. Bioclimatology of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in the Eastern Alps: spatial and altitudinal climatic signals identified through a tree-ring network. Journal of Biogeography. doi:10.1111/j.1365-2699.2007.01747.x

The aim of the study was to identify the dominant spatial patterns of Fagus sylvatica radial growth in the Eastern Alps to understand their relationships to climate variation and bioclimatic gradients. Scientists from Italy, Austria, Slovenia, USA, and Spain have investigated fourteen beech stands in the Eastern Alps, growing between 200 and 1500 m a.s.l. ...

SHORT REPORT FROM BEIJING

Some of us just returned from Beijing, China where we attended the 7th International Conference on Dendrochronology organized by the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in cooperation with IUFRO, TRS, ATR and sponsored by PAGES (Past Global Changes), Chinese Academy of Sciences and NSFC (National Natural Foundation of China).

The main organizer Qui Bin Zhang with a long list of co-workers did great work. The conference run smoothly fall the time. We can say that we had best possible hosts.

Practically each of 272 participants from over 30 countries contributed to high quality of the conference and to warm and friendly atmosphere. In the week from 11 till 17 June we had a lot of opportunity to work and also to learn about Beijing and China and Chinese people.

A considerable number of participants is at the moment still on one of the excursions (mainly Tibet with over 40 participants) or at other places working on different projects in cooperation with China.

I am sure that the conference will be in the future mentioned again and again.

Dear organizers thank you!

Katarina Cufar
